4.2 Starting with jump wires
Caution
!
When using external starting aid two external bat-
teries (24 V system) are required, one for each on-
board battery.
A wrong connection will cause severe damage in
the electric system.

First connect the plus poles with the jump lead.

Then connect the ground cable first to the minus
l
pole of the current supplying auxiliary battery and
then to engine or chassis ground, as far away from
the battery as possible(Fig. 15).
Start as described under "Starting the engine".

Once the engine is running switch on a powerful
l
consumer (working light, etc.).
Caution
!
If no powerful consumer is switched on voltage
peaks may occur when separating the connecting
cables between the batteries, which could dam-
age electrical components.
After starting disconnect the negative poles (ground
l
cable) first and the positive poles after.
Switch off the consumer.

In events of emergency do not use the main bat-
tery switch to shut down the engine. This will re-
sult in damage to engine and electronic engine
control units.
The main battery switch must only be pulled out at
the earliest 40 seconds after switching off the ig-
nition.
