  • How do I program the Motorola APX 4500Li two-way radio?

    Programming of the radio is primarily done by a qualified radio technician using radio programming software to assign features to controls, or to program buttons as shortcuts to radio functions or preset channels/groups.

    However, you can customize certain feature parameters using Front Panel Programming (FPP) mode. To enter this mode:

    1. Press the Menu Select button directly below FPP.
    2. Enter the password and press the Menu Select button directly below OK.
      • If no password is entered, only non-password protected zones will be displayed.
    3. Select the desired zone and channel.
    4. Select the parameter to edit.

  • What programming software is compatible with the Motorola APX 4500Li?

  • Why is my Motorola APX 4500Li not transmitting?

    Your radio may not be transmitting due to several reasons:

    • Talk Prohibit/PTT Inhibit: Transmissions are not allowed when the PTT button is pressed.
    • Smart PTT Inhibit: The channel is busy with the Smart PTT feature enabled, preventing transmission.
    • Illegal Mode: You may be attempting to transmit on a receive-only conventional mode, or attempting to select a dynamic mode where no dynamic ID assignment has been made.
    • Transmit Inhibit Feature Enabled: If the Transmit Inhibit feature is enabled, the radio stops all transmissions, including voice and data. The radio can receive messages but cannot reply.
    • Ignition Not Present: If the ignition is not present and the Transmit Inhibit feature is enabled, all transmissions are inhibited.

  • How do I troubleshoot a Motorola APX 4500Li that isn't working?

    If your radio is not working, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

    • Power Cycle: If your radio is locked up or the display shows FAIL 01/09, turn the radio off and then back on.
    • Check for Intermittent Operation: If radio operation is intermittent, check with other users on the system for similar problems. This may indicate a system malfunction rather than a radio failure.
    • Power Up Issues: If your radio does not power up, or if Fail ##/## or Error ##/## appears on the display, or if the display goes blank, or the unit appears locked up, refer to the Radio Maintenance section for more information.
    • Contact a Technician: If symptoms persist, or if your unit exhibits other problems, contact a qualified radio technician or your dealer for service. Maintenance and repairs, especially for UL certified radios or issues involving radio seals, should only be performed by qualified technicians or approved service centers.

  • How do I use the Motorola APX 4500Li two-way radio?

    To use your radio, follow these general steps:

    • Turning On: Briefly press the Power Button.
    • Adjusting Volume: Rotate the Multi-Function Knob (MFK) clockwise to increase or counterclockwise to decrease the volume. The display will show volume bars and the level.
    • Selecting a Channel: Use the Multi-Function Knob (MFK) or the radio menu Chan to select a desired channel. If the channel is not set as the primary mode, press the MFK once and then rotate it.
    • Making a Radio Call: You can make a call by selecting a zone, channel, subscriber ID, or talkgroup using the preprogrammed Zone menu, the Multi-Function Knob (MFK), a preprogrammed One Touch button, or the Contacts list.
    • Transmitting: Press the Push-To-Talk (PTT) Button on the side of the microphone to transmit. Release it to listen. The microphone is activated when the PTT button is pressed.

  • How do I adjust the volume on my Motorola APX 4500Li?

    To adjust the volume on your radio:

    1. Rotate the Multi-Function Knob (MFK) clockwise to increase the volume.
    2. Rotate the Multi-Function Knob (MFK) counterclockwise to decrease the volume.

    The display will show volume bars and the volume level as you change it. The volume level can be adjusted in 16 steps or 32 steps. A fast turn of the MFK adjusts the volume in 16 steps with large increments, while a slow turn adjusts it in 32 steps with small increments.
