  • How do I change the channel on my Motorola APX 5500 radio?

    To change the channel on your radio, you can either use the Mode Rocker or the radio menu:

    • Using the Mode Rocker:

    1. Press the Mode Rocker Up or Down to select the desired channel.

    2. Press the Home button or the PTT button to confirm the channel.

    3. Press the PTT button to transmit on the displayed zone channel.

    • Using the Radio Menu:

    1. Navigate to "Chan" using the 4-Way Navigation Button.

    2. Press the Menu Select button directly below "Chan".

    3. Navigate to the required channel using the 4-Way Navigation Button.

    4. Press the Menu Select button directly below "Sel" to confirm the selected channel.

    5. Press the PTT button to transmit on the displayed zone channel.

  • How do I reset my Motorola APX 5500 radio?
    If your radio is locked up or the display shows "FAIL 01/09", you should turn the radio off and then back on. If this does not correct the condition, take the radio to a qualified radio technician for service.

  • Why is my Motorola APX 5500 radio not transmitting?

    If your radio is not transmitting, it could be due to several reasons:

    • Transmit Inhibit Feature: If the Transmit Inhibit feature is enabled, the radio stops all transmissions, including voice and data. It can receive messages but cannot send acknowledgments.
    • Smart PTT (Conventional Only): If Smart PTT is enabled in your radio, you cannot transmit on an active channel. This feature prevents users from talking over other radio conversations.
    • Out of Range: If your radio goes out of the range of the system, it can no longer lock onto a control channel, and you will hear a low-pitched tone and/or the display will show "Out of range".
    • Secure Mode: If the selected channel is preprogrammed for clear-only operation and you press the PTT button, an invalid mode tone sounds, and the display shows "Clear TX only". The radio will not transmit until you disable the secure mode.

    Yes, the Motorola APX 5500 can be used with a repeater system. The Repeater Operation increases the radio coverage area by connecting with other radios through a repeater. The transmit and receive frequencies are different in this mode. You can switch between repeater and direct operation using a preprogrammed Repeater/Direct switch or the radio menu.

  • How do I clean and maintain my Motorola APX 5500 radio?

    To clean the external surface of your radio, follow these steps:

    1. Combine one teaspoon of mild dishwashing detergent with one gallon of water (0.5% solution).
    2. Apply the solution sparingly with a stiff, non-metallic, short-bristled brush, ensuring excess detergent does not get entrapped near connectors, controls, or crevices.
    3. Dry the radio thoroughly with a soft, lint-free cloth.

    Avoid using solvents to clean your radio as they may permanently damage the housing. Do not submerge the radio in detergent solution.

  • How do I unmute my Motorola APX 5500 radio?

    To unmute your radio, you can either use the preprogrammed Voice Mute button or the radio menu:

    • Using the preprogrammed Voice Mute button:
      • Press the preprogrammed Voice Mute button to toggle the feature off or on.
    • Using the radio menu:
      1. Navigate to "VMut" using the 4-Way Navigation Button.
      2. Press the Menu Select button directly below "VMut".

    The display will momentarily show "Voice mute off", and you will hear a short tone, indicating that the feature is disabled.

Your dealer can program the programmable buttons as shortcuts to radio functions or preset channels/ groups depending on the duration of a button press.

Contact entries are alphabetically sorted according to entry alias. Each alias can have up to five IDs of different call types associated with it.
