What is the difference between an
SMS, an MMS, email, a messaging
app and a notification?
• SMS (Short Message Service) is a format for short
messages and only allows text in messages to be
sent.
• MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) is a type
of SMS that allows small amounts of data such as
photos to be sent in addition to text.
• Email is a messaging system that people are
generally familiar with from using a computer. You
need an email address to use it.
• Messaging apps are apps that were developed
to be used on a smartphone. There are lots of
different messaging apps, one being WhatsApp.
• Notifications are small pieces of information that
your smartphone uses to tell you about activities
on the phone.
