Glossary
Subnet mask
The subnet mask specifies which parts of an IP address are assigned to the network
number. The bits in the IP address whose corresponding bits in the subnet mask have the
value 1 are assigned to the network number.
Subnet number
A system consists of several subnets with unique subnet numbers.
System
This means all the electrical equipment within a system. A system includes programmable
logic controllers, operator control and monitoring devices, bus systems, field devices,
actuators, supply lines.
TCP/IP

Transmission speed
The transmission speed specifies the number of bits transmitted per second. On PROFIBUS,
transmission speeds of 9.6 Kbps to 12 Mbps are possible.
Transport Control Protocol (TCP)
Protocol for connection-oriented data transmission in networks; it belongs to the family of
Internet protocols.
Trigger data
Data read from the data area of the CPU when a → logical trigger is triggered and then sent
to the → ERP subscriber.
UDP
User Datagram Protocol
Datagram service for simple and data transfer beyond the boundaries of a network without
acknowledgment.
UDP connection
Connection type that can be configured in STEP 7. To be able to transfer SIMATIC S7 UDP
frames, UDP connections need to be configured. This provides the address information and
system resources required for the transfer. Since UDP is a datagram service, there is no
explicit connection establishment between the communications partners during operation -
the datagrams are simply sent based on the configured information without previous
connection establishment.
