Bleed the hydraulic circuit (without autopilot)
Connecting the SmartPilot pump and hoses will introduce air into the steering system,
making it feel 'spongy' and 'lumpy' to operate.
Bleeding the hydraulic circuit requires the Mercury hydraulic pump to be running. The pump
will run when the outboard engine is started. Alternatively, If the boat is out of the water, use
the Mercury 'Power Steering Primer Module' (
instructions.
Bleed the steering system and remove air from the hydraulic circuit as follows:
1. Remove the reservoir cover, filler cap and filter.
2. Start the engine.
3. If the reservoir level falls below 50% stop the engine and refill with hydraulic oil.
Only use Mercury hydraulic oil part No. 92-858002K01
Note:
4. Restart the engine.
5. Slowly turn the helm to Starboard, if the fluid level falls below 50% stop the engine and
refill the reservoir with hydraulic oil.
6. Restart the engine.
7. Slowly turn the helm to Port, if the fluid level falls below 50% stop the engine and refill
with hydraulic oil.
8. Repeat the lock to lock turn ten times, refilling the reservoir as necessary. Check all joints
are free from leaks.
9. Replace the reservoir filter, filler cap and cover.
Check for leaks
1.
Ensure all hydraulic joints are secure, then turn
the wheel hard to port.
2.
With the port lines at maximum pressure, check
the port lines for leaks, paying particular
attention to the joints. Repeat steps 1 & 2 with
the wheel to starboard.
