SmartPilot Verado Installation and Commissioning Guide
Check the autopilot steering sense
Manually center the engine(s), then press the auto key so the SmartPilot is in Auto mode.
Check that the display shows AUTO.
CAUTION: Be ready to press standby if the outboard moves hard over.
1. Press the +10 key once.
Steering sense
2. Check that the outboard moves to starboard a few degrees and then stops.
• if the outboard drives hard over, immediately press standby to prevent further out-
board movement
3. If the outboard moves to port or the outboard drives hard over:
• press standby
• turn off the power
• reverse the motor wires connected to the SmartPilot computer
• switch on the power and re-check
If the outboard overshoots and has to drive back or starts to hunt back and forth, you will need
to increase the rudder damping value in the Dealer Calibration settings, see
Bleed the hydraulic lines (with autopilot)
1. Manually center the engine(s), then press the auto key so the SmartPilot is in Auto mode.
Check that the display shows AUTO.
2. Press the +10 key five times and check that the outboard is hard over starboard.
3. To bleed any remaining air from the system, attach a transparent hose to the manual
bleed valve on the port side steering ram. Route this hose back to the oil reservoir and
open the bleed valve. Once any air bubbles have cleared, close the bleed valve
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3, pressing the -10 key five times and check that the outboard is hard
over to port.
5. Press standby and confirm that helm steering operates smoothly from lock to lock.
While at full lock, visually check all joints are leak free and hoses are secure from damage.
