1-3. INSTRUMENTS COVERED BY THIS MANUAL
Hewlett-Packard uses a two-part, nine character serial number which is stamped on the
serial number plate (see Figure 1-1) attached to the instrument's rear panel. T h e first four
digits and the letter are the serial prefix and the last five digits are the suffix. T h e letter
placed between the two sections identifies the country where the instrument was manufac-
tured. The prefix is the same for all identical instruments; it changes only when a change is
made to the instrument. The suffix, however, is assigned sequentially and is unique to each
instrument. T h e contents of this manual apply to instruments with the serial number pre-
fixes listed under Serial Numbers on the title page.
An instrument manufactured after the printing date of this manual may have a serial number
prefix that is not listed on the title page. This unlisted serial number prefix indicates that the
instrument is different from those described in this manual. T h e manual for a new instru-
ment may be accompanied by a yellow Manual Changes supplement or have a different
manual part number. T h e Manual Changes supplement contains "change information" that
explains how to adapt the manual to newer instruments.
In addition to change information, the supplement may contain information for correcting
errors (Errata) in the manual. T o keep this manual as current and accurate as possible,
Hewlett-Packard recommends that you periodically request the latest Manual Changes sup-
plement. T h e supplement for this manual is identified by this manual's printing data and its
part number, both of which appear on the manual's title page. Complimentary copies of the
supplement are available from Hewlett-Packard. I f the serial prefix or number of an instru-
ment i s lower than that o n the title page o f this manual, see APPENDIX A , MANUAL
CHANGES.

Table 1-1 lists the equipment required for adjustment, performance testing, and trouble-
shooting the HP 4284A. O t h e r equipment may be substituted i f it meets or exceeds the
critical specifications given in Table 1-1.
