Checking the load chain for wear
Continuous monitoring of the load chain is a mandatory
requirement in accordance with DIN 685 Part 5 or UVV
BGV D8 § 27 (VBG 8 § 27). The load chain must be
checked after commissioning and under normal opera-
ting conditions after approx. 200 operating hours or
10,000 load cycles, and at shorter intervals in case of se-
vere operating conditions.
The links should be checked especially at the points of
contact for wear, cracking, deformation and other da-
mage.
The chain is to be renewed at:
- Reduction of the nominal thickness at the points of
contact by 10% or, if worn to the limit value in the
table Fig. 5.
- Elongation of a limb by 10% or of the chain over 11
limbs by 4% or, when stretched to the limit value in
the table Fig. 5.
- rigid-drawn chain links
When changing the chain, check the chain guide and re-
place if necessary.
ACHTUNG!DANGER
As spare chain use only original spare chain from the
manufacturer of the hoist.

Testing the Chain Hoist

The electric chain hoist can be used after: UVV
"Winches, lifting and pulling equipment" BGV D8 (VBG
8), UVV "Cranes"
BGV D6 (VBG 9)
testing in compliance with BGV D8 Section 23 (VBG 8
Section 23) by a specialist before commissioning and
following major changes
testing in compliance with BGV D6 Section 25 (VBG 9
Section 25) by an authorised expert before commission-
ing and following any major changes.
annual repeat testing of equipment, crane and support-
ing structures by a specialist. Where equipment is sub-
ject to heavy operational conditions (e.g. frequent oper-
ation with a full load, dusty or aggressive environment,
frequent stopping, long operation time) the testing inter-
vals should be reduced.
- With regard to testing cranes, experts are exclu-si-
vely TÜV experts or experts authorised by pro-fes-
sional bodies or associations.
- Specialists are customer service installers em-
ployed by the manufacturer or specially trained
specialist personnel.
Evidence of chain hoist testing should be kept in an in-
spection log book.
Testing is generally a visual and functional test. It in-clu-
des an inspection of the condition of the components
and equipment, the completeness and functionality of
the safety equipment and the completeness of the log
book.
