5.5.4 Oil Lubrication

We recommend mineral oil CLP 68 (ISO VG 68) according to DIN 51517 T.3. Please refer to table 5 for oil types that are
confirmed by Harmonic Drive®. The oil temperature during operation must not exceed 90° C. Before using other oil types
please ask Harmonic Drive®.
Ölmenge
The required oil quantity is dependent on the design. Therefore, the quantity specified in the drawing/service manual of the
machine is decisive for the oil quantity to fill in. Please also refer to illustration 41.1 and table 41.2. The defined oil levels must
be obeyed in any case. Too much oil results in excessive heat production and early wear due to thermal destruction of the oil.
If the oil level is too low, this may lead to early wear as a result of lubricant deficiency.

Table 31.2 shows examples of lubricants for special operating demands. In individual cases other lubricants may be recom-
mendable, and special limit values may have to be considered for product calculations at extended operating temperatures.
Please ask Harmonic Drive AG for more information.

When the Harmonic Drive® gear is to be used vertically with the Wave Generator placed at the bottom or on top, special conside-
ration must be given because even small changes of the oil level affect the churning losses. For horizontal installation a mini-
mum oil level according to dimension A in illustration 41.1 / table 41.3 and a minimum oil volume according to the specification
given in table 41.2 should be chosen.
