Password and SSH access

8.5.1

Router password

The password for user access to the access point via the web interface can be changed under Router
password in the Administration menu item in the System menu. Here, enter the new password in the
two fields.

SSH access

If you wish to gain access to the access point via a shell/text terminal, you can enable an instance for
the SSH server in the system under SSH access in the same menu item. To do this, click Add instance.
You can then specify the interface and port, and decide whether SSH password authentication is
permitted, whether the root user can log in with a password instead of a certificate, and whether re-
mote hosts can connect to local SSH tunnel ports.

Use the SSH-enabled terminal software (e.g. PUTTY freeware) to connect to the newly established
access point. To log in, use the IP address of the access point, the user name root, and the password
you set on the web interface. After successfully logging on, you will receive a Unix shell for the Open-
WRT access point operating system.
