addr command during the Model 5390 initial installation. You can reset the address at any time
thereafter by changing the Model 5390 subnet_mask parameter.
Certain combinations of the Model 5390 subnet mask and Internet address have special meaning:
• Setting the Model 5390 Internet address to 0.0.0.0 or 255.255.255.255 turns off all IP
services, including SLIP, PPP, and IP routing. The Model 5390 server continues to support
non-IP services, such as ARAP and LAT, provided that they are configured properly.
• Setting the Model 5390 Internet address to a valid value and Model 5390 subnet_mask to
255.255.255.255 installs IP but specifies that the Model 5390 server does not have an Ethernet
connection. IP services, including SLIP, PPP, and IP routing, are still available.
By default, the Model 5390 server acts as an authoritative agent for ICMP Address Mask Requests.
If another host broadcasts this message querying for the subnet mask, the Model 5390 server replies
with the subnet mask. Optionally, you can prevent the Model 5390 server from responding by setting
the authoritative_agent parameter to N.

Booting and Dumping

The Model 5390 server obtains its operational code by downloading it over the network from a
UNIX host that runs Model 5390 file server software, a non-UNIX host running tftp, another Model
5390 server configured as a boot server (running the same operational code), or the local media
(self-boot). The Model 5390 server boots each time it is powered up and upon receipt of a boot
command.
The Model 5390 server can dump to a file server or a host running tftp. The Model 5390 server
performs a dump upon receipt of either the na command dumpboot or the superuser CLI boot –d
command, or automatically when it detects fatal internal errors or failures.

Setting the Preferred Load Host

The pref_load_addr parameter specifies the preferred load (or file server) host. This is the host from
which the Model 5390 server first requests a down-line load of its operational code. If this parameter
is not defined or the specified host is not available, the Model 5390 server broadcasts its boot request
and loads operational code from the first host that responds. You can modify the pref_load_addr
parameter using na or the admin command; specify the host by its Internet address or its name.
