Lane Keep Assist

Fig. 91: Windshield camera
With the aid of the front camera A and within the
limits of the system, Lane Keep Assist detects the
course of the road ahead based on the lane mark-
ings. When the vehicle approaches a detected lane
marking and is in danger of leaving the driving
lane, the system warns by means of corrective
steering intervention and helps to keep the vehicle
in the lane. The driver can override the steering in-
tervention at any time.
The system assists the driver in keeping the ve-
hicle in the lane, but cannot replace the driver's at-
tentiveness. Lane Keep Assist is a comfort system
which also comprises a warning feature. If the ve-
hicle crosses a lane marking without activating a
turn signal, the system alerts the driver to the fact
acoustically and visually. The relevant lane line is
highlighted in the Speed & Assist display on the in-
strument cluster as well as in the status display,
and a warning tone sounds. For this purpose, the
acoustic warning must be switched on in the
ASSIST
menu on the PCM.
The system is designed for driving on highways
and well-surfaced country roads. It is only opera-
tive above a speed of approx. 40 mph (65 km/h).
The operative system does not issue a warning or
steer if the driver activates a turn signal before
crossing a lane marking. In this situation, the sys-
tem interprets the lane change as intentional.
On vehicles with Lane Change Assist:
Please see chapter "Lane Change Assist (LCA)" on
page 138.If the vehicle is equipped with Lane
Change Assist and this is active, the driver is
warned through corrective steering intervention
when changing lanes in a potentially critical situa-
tion (information stage, warning stage). This
also happens if the turn signal is activated for the
relevant direction. If the steering intervention is
overridden by the driver, an additional warning is
provided via a warning tone (if active).
Lack of attention
WARNING
The driver remains responsible at all times when
driving, e.g. staying in lane, even if Lane Keep As-
sist is on. The system does not replace the driver's
attentiveness.
– The system can help to keep the vehicle in the
lane within the specified limits, but it does not
drive it. Keep your hands on the steering wheel
at all times order to always by ready to steer. If
a warning appears on the instrument cluster,
take over control of the vehicle immediately.
– The driver is always responsible for keeping
the vehicle in the lane:
– In the case of heavy braking, for example, the
corrective steering interventions may not take
place.
– In the case of active steering by the driver,
corrective steering intervention can be re-
duced or may not take place.
– It is possible that not all lane markings will be
detected. Steering intervention can only take
place on the side where a lane marking has
been detected.
– Other road structures or objects may be

incorrectly identified as lane markings. This
can lead to unexpected or missing steering in-
terventions/acoustic warnings.
– In conditions of poor visibility, one-sided or in-
adequate markings, or in the event of exces-
sively narrow lanes, the early lane center
guidance (if active) may respond to the lane
marking somewhat later.
– Corrective steering intervention alone may not
be sufficient to keep the vehicle in the driving
lane in the case of track ruts, inclined road sur-
faces or crosswind. The driver must actively
steer in such situations.
e Caution - risk of accident! Never use Lane Keep
Assist in the following situations:
– When increased attention is required on the
part of the driver.
– In conjunction with an extremely sporty
driving style.
– In adverse weather conditions (e.g. fog,
snow or heavy rain).
– Under unfavorable road conditions (incl.
road surface state).
– In roadworks areas.
– When approaching humps and dips.
e Drive with extreme care.
e Always pay attention to the traffic situation and
the vehicle surroundings.
e Adapt your driving speed to road and weather
conditions.
e Do not attach any objects to the steering
wheel.
