Engine oil

A
It is important to perform oil changes regularly in
B
accordance with the intervals specified in your
C
Maintenance Schedule.
D
Engine oil consumption
E
It is normal for your engine to consume oil. The
rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and
F
viscosity of oil, the speed at which the engine is
G
operated, the climate, road conditions as well as
the amount of dilution and oxidation of the
H
lubricant.
I
If the vehicle is used for repeated short trips, and
consumes a normal amount of oil, the engine oil
J
measurement may not show any drop in the oil
K
level at all. This is because the oil is gradually be-
coming diluted with fuel or moisture, making it ap-
L
pear that the oil level has not changed.
M
The diluting ingredients evaporate out when the
vehicle is driven at high speeds, as on an express-
N
way, making it then appear that oil is excessively
O
consumed after driving at high speeds.
If the conditions you drive your vehicle in are dusty,
P
humid, or hot, the frequency of the oil change in-
Q
tervals should be greater.
If the vehicle is driven at a high rate of speed, cli-
R
matic conditions are warm, and the load is high,
S
the oil should be checked more frequently, as driv-
ing conditions will determine the rate of oil
T
consumption.
U
– The engine in your vehicle depends on oil to lu-
bricate and cool all of its moving parts. There-
V
fore, the engine oil should be checked regularly
W
and kept at the required level.
– Make it a habit to have the engine oil level
X
checked with every refueling.
Y
The oil pressure warning light is not an oil-level
Z
indicator.
110
The oil pressure warning light indicates serious
engine damage may be occuring when lit, if engine
rpm is above idle speed.
Checking engine oil level
The oil level should be checked at regular intervals
(e.g. every time you refuel).
Responding to oil level warning
If the oil level is too low, a warning message ap-
pears on the instrument cluster, indicating that the
engine must be topped up with oil immediately.
> Please see chapter "Warning and Information
Messages" on page 256.
Reading the engine-oil level in the in-
strument cluster
NOTICE
Risk of engine damage.
If the oil level is below the minimum mark, the en-
gine will not be sufficiently lubricated
e Check the oil level regularly.
e Do not allow the oil level to drop below the min-
imum mark.
> Please see chapter "Instrument cluster " on
page 125.
Choosing and topping up engine oil
Swallowing Engine Oil
DANGER
Engine oil is hazardous to your health and may be
fatal if swallowed.
e Keep engine oil out of children's reach.
Engine Oil Cancer Risk
WARNING
Used engine oil contains chemicals that have
caused cancer in laboratory animals.
e Always protect your skin by washing thoroughly
with soap and water.
Engine compartment
WARNING
blowers and other mov-
ing parts in the area of
the engine
While work is in progress, hands, fingers, articles
of clothing, necklaces, or long hair can become
trapped by moving parts in the engine compart-
ment, e.g., engine compartment blowers or drive
belts. The engine compartment blowers are in-
stalled under the hood. After the engine is
switched off, the engine compartment tempera-
ture is still monitored. Depending on temperature,
the engine compartment blowers may continue to
run or start to run.
e You should only work in this area with the ut-
most care and the engine should always be
switched off; make sure that body parts, ar-
ticles of clothing or items of jewelry do not get
trapped by radiator fans, engine compartment
blowers or other moving parts.
Burning engine oil
WARNING
Engine oil can ignite if it comes into contact with
hot engine parts. Engine oil stored in non-venti-
lated areas or thrown-away cloths with engine oil
