Managing the Fibre Channel SAN Switch 2/8 EL

Management Overview

The SAN Switch 2/8 EL can be managed using TCP/IP protocol, in-band over Fibre
Channel, or out-of-band by connecting to the Ethernet port. The management
functions allow the administrator to monitor fabric topology, port status, physical
status, and other information to aid in system debugging and performance analysis.
The SAN Switch 2/8 EL is compatible with the following management interfaces:
CLI via a telnet or serial connection—For more information refer to the
StorageWorks by Compaq Fabric OS Procedures Guide Part Number
AA-RQ6EA-TE and the StorageWorks by Compaq
Part Number AA-RQ6FA-TE.
Standard SNMP applications—For more information refer to the StorageWorks
by Compaq MIB Reference Guide, Part Number AA-RQ6HA-TE.
Web Tools—Provides an easy-to-use GUI,
and manage entire fabrics and individual switches and ports from a standard workstation.
Provides you with the advantage of being "virtually" in front of any fabric, switch,
or port. For more information refer to the StorageWorks by Compaq Web Tools
User Guide, Part Number AA-RR6GA-TE.

Optional Management Features

In addition, Compaq provides the following optional management tools in support of
the SAN switch.

QuickLoop

The QuickLoop option allows arbitrated loops to attach to a fabric. Without modifying
their drivers, private target on the arbitrated loops can be accessed by public or private
hosts elsewhere on the fabric. Advantages to integrating QuickLoop into your SAN
include:
Supports communication between devices that are not fabric-aware. For example,
QuickLoop allows the SAN Switch 2/8 EL to emulate a hub environment, while offering
the additional benefit of fabric connectivity.
The QuickLoop and Zoning combination allows a private host to fully participate
in a SAN.
NOTE: A license may have been installed on the switch at the factory. If not, contact your switch
supplier to obtain a license key.
