    It is extremely important that you keep the license agreement in a safe place for future reference. This is needed in case the unit is serviced or replaced by ADE. If you own more than one ADE system with the ASC 2000, you should never duplicate or exchange serial numbers and/or activation keys.

    Unauthorized Repairs Do not open your ASC 2000 unit or attempt any unauthorized repairs to the boards. Do not open the controller chassis. Notify ADE Customer Support if you are experiencing problems with your unit. Opening the chassis will invalidate your warranty.

    For that reason, if you own more than one ADE system with the ASC 2000, you should never exchange or duplicate serial numbers and/or activation keys.

    These are the Internet and Hardware addresses of the rtVAX controller. The Hardware address appears in the System Options screen in the ADE SYSTEM CONTROLLER (CSA). The Internet address appears under the View menu. DECNET KEY: If you have purchased DECNET networking software for your system, you will be provided with a code which must be entered in order to use DECNET.

    The Advanced System Controller (ASC) 2000 consists of a PC with a SCO-UNIX operating system and a rtVAX 300 board. The system is designed to run most ADE wafer characterization systems. The ASC 2000 has a 3 Amp rating. (Ignore any labels on the unit that indicate it has a 10 Amp rating.)

    Before your system is shipped from the factory, a back-up of the hard disk (including the SCO-UNIX operating system and ADE software and files) is stored to one or two tapes. The SCO-UNIX operating system by itself is also stored to one or two tapes.

    Handling Compact Disks Back-up Universal System Controller and ADE Tools software for the ASC 2000 is contained on a compact disk. To protect the CD from damage, follow the precautions listed below: 1. Handle the CD by the outer edge only. This will prevent fingerprints and smears on the surface.

    UPS. This allows plenty of time for an orderly shutdown of the UNIX operating system, which automatically initiates after a power failure occurs. Note, however, that the ADE equipment itself will power off immediately during a loss of power (because it cannot be plugged into the UPS).

Loading the Operating System from the Hard Disk Drive When you power up the ASC 2000, the operating system boots and the controller displays the following: Boot The system is preset at the factory to boot automatically, with no keystrokes necessary.

    In the desktop, a "Home Directory" icon is shown in the upper left corner, labeled with your login account name. (For example, if you have logged in as "ade", then the Home Directory will be labeled "ade".) To open this directory, double-click the icon.

    Manual Starting The STANDARD USER INTERFACE The ASC 2000 is configured to launch the STANDARD USER INTERFACE after start-up. If it is necessary to start the application manually, follow the instructions below. To start the STANDARD USER INTERFACE from the ADE SYSTEM CONTROLLER (CSA): 1.

    NOTE: If your screen freezes and your trackball and keyboard fail to respond, do not turn off the power switch on the ASC 2000. This may damage the UNIX operating system. Instead, unplug the Uninterruptable Power Supply from the power source. This will automatically start a system shutdown.

    The System Administrator, or "superuser," should be a high- level individual familiar with the UNIX operating system. Because the superuser has access to functions barred to most users, ADE recommends that one high-level individual should perform all System Administrator functions.

    USER INTERFACE. Advanced System Controller (ASC) 2000 The ASC 2000 is the name of a computer system which operates ADE wafer characterization systems. It consists of a personal computer with a SCO- UNIX operating system and a rtVAX 300 board that resides in the PC chassis.
  • Page 60 An icon is a pictorial representation of a file or program stored on the computer's hard disk drive. Login screen The login screen is a box which appears when the ASC 2000 is first powered on. It requests your account name and password in order to gain access to the desktop.
  • Page 61 Performing a soft reset causes the rtVAX host controller to reboot and restart its VAXeln operating system (without resetting the actual rtVAX 300 board). To perform a Soft Reset, use the Commands menu in the ADE SYSTEM CON- TROLLER (CSA).
