Recording EFFECT 2 as an Insert Effect
Use the following steps to set-up another effect on the same channel. This time instead of putting the
effect in the Post Fader position, we will put it in the Insert position Ð which is appropriate for our guitar
example. If we were recording vocals, the Compressor effect might be appropriate to use as an Insert
effect.
Start with previous sections A through C (p.19) and continue as follows:
D. Route the Input to the EFFECTS processor
1) From INPUT MIX mode, press the CH EDIT button 1 to select channel 1.
2) Hold SHIFT and press EFFECT 2 (CH EDIT button 8).
3) Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select ÒInsert.Ó
NOTE: By choosing Insert as the routing for this effect, we will ensure that the audio signal from the Input
is being effected before it gets to the fader and that only the effected signal is being recorded.
E. Select the Effect to be used
1) Press the EFFECT button under EDIT CONDITION until ÒEFFECT-2 PRM?Ó appears.
2) Press the YES/ENTER button to confirm that we will be choosing an effect for the EFFECT-2 processor.
3) Use the TIME/VALUE dial to select an effect. Try Ò89=GuitarMulti1Ó for guitar or Ò67 CL:CompÓ for
compressing vocals or bass.
4) Press the YES/ENTER button to confirm the effect you have chosen. The effect name will stop
flashing.
NOTE: Because we have chosen to Insert the effect, its output is automatically routed to the
corresponding Track of the channel we routed the Input to. Therefore, there is no need to route the
output of the effects processor.
F. Adjust Track playback level
1) Press SELECT to choose TRACK MIX mode.
2) Move Fader 6 all the way up and then all the way down to cross the ÒNullÓ Point.
3) Set the fader to the desired playback level.
G. Record the guitar
1) Press the STATUS button for Track 6 until it is flashing red.
2) Press REC followed by PLAY to record with both EFFECT 1 and EFFECT 2.
3) When youÕre finished, press STOP.
4) Press the ZERO return button to go back to the beginning of the song.
5) Press PLAY. You will be able to hear what you recorded even though the STATUS button is still in REC
mode and flashing red. This is a convenient feature and prevents you from having to switch the Track
STATUS to PLAY mode (green light) in order to playback what you just recorded. Remember to
change the STATUS to PLAY mode when you are finished recording on that Track so that you donÕt
record over it.
Loop Recording
If you want to make a certain section of a song repeat while youÕre recording, you can use the Loop
function. This is a very simple and efficient way to record a tricky section that you might not get perfect on
the first try. The Loop function allows you to play the section continuously until you get it right without
having to stop, rewind and record again. In addition to being a big time saver, itÕs also a good practice
tool.
1) Press the LOCATOR button (under EDIT CONDITION) several times until ÒLpStÓ is displayed.
2) Set the desired loop start point with the TIME/VALUE dial.
3) Press the PARAMETER right button once to display ÒLpEd.Ó
4) Set the desired loop end point with the TIME/VALUE dial.
5) Press the LOOP button under the LOCATOR section (the orange light above the button will turn on) to
activate the two loop points we just set.
6) Press the PLAY button to start the song. While the VS-880 is playing the loop, practice the part you
wish to record.
7) When youÕre ready to record, press the REC button.
NOTE: Once you press the REC button, recording will engage for one time through the loop. Once the
loop has been played once, the VS-880 will stop recording. This prevents you from recording over the
beginning of the looped section before you have time to physically press the STOP button. If you let the
VS-880 continue to play, recording will begin again after the loop ends. Basically, on every other pass
recording is engaged. This enables you to stay in continuous loop record until you get the take you want.
