    1 General Information | 1.1 Text Conventions and Link Types 1 General Information This Instruction Manual is considered to be part of the Focal CC. Herein after referred to as De- vice. This Instruction Manual contains basic steps and safety information that must be observed during operation and maintenance.

    (FESEM), equipped with an ultramicrotome stage. Focal CC is used to increase the image quality by eliminating charging effects. The effect of charg- ing of non-conducting specimens is eliminated by the injection of gaseous nitrogen above the specimen surface.

    ZEISS service representative should be informed. The Device can only be operated after proper installation by a ZEISS service representative and in compliance with the operating conditions. Do not operate the Device until you have completely read and understood the entire documentation delivered with the Device.

    3 Product and Functional Description of Focal CC The Focal CC consists of a valved supply line and feedthrough on a defined chamber port and a precision attachment to the ultramicrotome inside the specimen chamber. The nozzle is fixed to the stage.

    § Imaging position As long as the Focal CC is activated in SmartSEM, the gas flow through the hose is always on, re- gardless which position the nozzle is in. The ultramicrotome software is not aware of the status of the Focal CC.

    Charge The Focal CC operates to avoid the charging effect. This is achieved by injecting a local flow of Compensation gaseous nitrogen onto the area of interest.

    ZEISS 4 Installation Installation and commissioning are carried out by authorized ZEISS service representative. The in- stallation requirements are to be observed and adhered to. After installation or retrofitting, thor- oughly check that the Device is in a safe operational state, making sure in particular that all pro- tective covers (e.g.

    Do not use the Focal CC gas flow at a default value of 100 %. This places a heavier strain on the vacuum system and will reduce the time period before expensive vacuum components need re- placement, and may speed up degradation in column reliability.

    Only conduct preventive measures described in the Instruction Manual. All tasks of maintenance, service and cleaning not described here must only be performed by an authorized ZEISS service representative. Any unauthorized intervention in the Device or any operation outside the scope of the intended use can lead to injuries and property damage, and voids all rights to warranty claims.
