8.0 MAINTENANCE AND CLEANING

8.2 Wheels and tires maintenance

To ensure that your wheelchair functions properly, it is essential that the tires
are kept at the correct pressure. The correct tire pressure is indicated on the
side of the tire.
Tires that are too soft will have a negative eff ect on the wheelchair's
performance. Moving the wheelchair will require more energy, making more
demands on the batteries. Furthermore, wear on under-infl ated tires is
increased.
When inspecting the tires for signs of wear, look for signifi cant scuff marks,
cuts, and a diminished tire tread. Tires will need to be changed when the tread
cannot be seen over the complete surface of the tire (Fig. 8.1).
