Boat In The Water Tests

ENGINE IDLE SPEED

With the boat in the water, the drive unit in forward gear, and the engine at normal operating
temperature, the engine should idle at the RPM specified in appropriate Mercury MerCruiser
Operation, Maintenance, and Warranty Manual. If the idle speed is incorrect, check the throttle
cable and adjust as necessary.

WIDE OPEN THROTTLE TEST

Follow this procedure to operate the engine at full throttle before the break‑in period is complete.
1. Place the remote control in neutral and start the engine.
2. Slowly advance the throttle until the engine reaches 1300 RPM.
3. Monitor all gauges for normal readings.
4. When the engine reaches normal operating temperature, bring the boat up on plane.
5. Advance the RPM in 200 RPM increments until the engine reaches its maximum rated RPM.
6. To test if the correct propeller has been installed, operate boat with normal load at WOT and
check the RPM with an accurate tachometer. Engine RPM should be near top of the specified
range so that, under a heavy load, engine speed does not fall below specifications. If engine
speed is too high, replace the propeller with a higher pitch propeller. Normally a 25 mm
(1 in.) change in propeller pitch change causes difference of 150 RPM.
7. Return to idle speed.
8. Shut off the engine.
9. Check the coolant level and add coolant if necessary.

TRIM TAB ADJUSTMENT

IMPORTANT: If the power package is equipped with power steering, set the trim tab so the trailing
edge is straight back.
1. For models with manual steering, operate the boat at normal cruising speed, trimmed to the
desired position. Turn the steering wheel left and right, noting in which direction the wheel
turns more easily.
2. With engine off and the boat at rest, remove the plug from the driveshaft housing and loosen
the attaching screw.
3. Tighten the attaching screw securely and install the plug. Operate the boat to check the setting.
Readjust the trim tab if needed.

CHECKING SHIFT OPERATION

With the sterndrive unit installed and the engine operating, ensure that drive unit shifts properly.
1. Shift into forward and reverse gear. The clutch must engage before the engine begins to
accelerate.

If the boat turns easier to the left, move the trailing edge of the trim tab to the left.
If the boat turns easier to the right, move the trailing edge of the trim tab to the right.
