The optimal filter is a compromise between stability and performance, where the maximum achievable
performance is a property of the headphone's acoustics. A large speaker will have a better low
frequency response, allowing to bring down the phase at a lower frequency without requiring too much
bass boost and less gain in the filter reduces stability problems.
