CHAPTER 6 | Navigating the Web-based Administration The EZ Connect ™ Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway’ s management int erf ace allows you t o conf igure bot h basic and advanced f eat ures and opt ions. Some of t hese advanced f unct ions include: hacker at t ack det ect ion, IP and MAC address f ilt ering, int rusion det ect ion, virt ual server set up, virt ual DMZ host s, as well as ot her advanced f unct ions.

IP Address Pool A dynamic IP st art address may be specif ied by t he user, e. g. 10. 1. 10. 1 (def ault value). Once t his st art IP address has been assigned, IP addresses running f rom 10. 1. 10. 10 t o 10. 1. 10. 199 will be part of t he dynamic IP address pool.

Predefined Service The Predef ined Service opt ion has a pull-down menu wit h several popular Service Applicat ions, such as HTTP (80), FTP (20/ 21), and AIM/ ICQ (5190). 6. 7 | Firewall The Wireless Cable Modem Gat eway provides a st at ef ul inspect ion f irewall (SPI), which is designed t o prot ect against Denial of Service (DoS) at t acks when act ivat ed. It s purpose is t o allow a privat e local area net work (LAN) t o be securely connect ed t o t he Int ernet .

6. 7. 2 | Special Application Some applicat ions, such as Int ernet gaming, videoconf erencing, Int ernet t elephony and ot hers, require mult iple connect ions. To access t he Special Applicat ion conf igurat ion page, on t he Side Navigat ion bar, click on [ Firewall] link and t hen click on t he [ Special Applicat ion] link.

6. 7. 4 | Schedule Rule This f eat ure will block Int ernet cont ent based on t he URL blocking f unct ion f or PCs on your net work based on t he day and or t ime. Note : The URL/ Keyword blocking f eat ure must be conf igured t o use t his schedule rule.

6. 7. 6 | DMZ Host (Demilitarized Zone) If you have a client PC t hat cannot run an Int ernet applicat ion properly f rom behind t he f irewall, t hen you can open t he client up t o unr est rict ed t wo-way Int ernet access. Ent er t he IP address of a DMZ host t o t his screen.
6. 9 | Status The St at us screen displays WAN/ LAN connect ion st at us, f irmware, and hardware version numbers, illegal at t empt s t o access your net work, as well as inf ormat ion on DHCP client s connect ed t o your net work.

The Cable Modem Syst em Event Log shows diagnost ic inf ormat ion about your connect ion and cable syst em. The Cable St at us page shows t he users t he init ializat ion process t he SMC8013WG has been t hrough, and also includes t he inf ormat ion about t he downst ream channel and t he upst ream channel t he modem is connect ed on.
