3. Operation

3.1 Zoom systems, operating principle

– Motorized zoom system, control with
UMC handheld controller with memory
function, foot switch and/or PC.
– Motorized functions: Zoom, iris diaphragm,
fine focusing, motor focus (optional).
The Leica Z6 APO A zoom system with 6.3:1
zoom allows continuous magnification change
from 0.57× – 3.6×.
– The Leica Z16 APO A zoom system with 16:1
zoom allows continuous magnification change
from 0.57× – 9.2×.
– There are certain switchable zoom positions
which can be activated for repetitive tasks:
– for Leica Z6 APO A for 0.57 / 0.8 / 1 /
1.25 / 1.6 / 2 / 2.5 / 3.2 / 3.6
– for Leica Z16 APO A for 0.57 / 0.8 / 1 /
1.25 / 1.6 / 2 / 2.5 / 3.2 / 4 / 5 / 6.3 / 8 / 9.2
– With the Y tube, the magnification is increased
by a factor of 1.25. The visual data with the Y
tube are listed in the table in Chapter 4.4.

28
Status when unplugging the power cable:
– The positions stored using the UMC manual
control system (Set button) are cleared.
– The last selected function on the foot switch
remains active if you switch on the system
without activating the foot switch.

3.3 Motorized functions

The motorized functions zoom, fine focus, motor
focus (optional) and iris diaphragm are used for
ergonomic working via UMC handheld controller.
The memory key allows for storing 5 combinations
and repeating tests quickly and exactly.
In comparison to a manual zoom system, the
motorized Leica Z6 APO A and Z16 APO A offer:
– improved ergonomics
– uniform and simple operation
– more flexibility for the user
– free hands for manipulation tasks
– faster replication of repetitive tasks.
Zoom, fine focus and iris diaphragm can optionally
be controlled via foot switch (see Chapter 3.5). This
frees both hands for manipulation, sorting and
preparation.

3.4 UMC handheld controller

– The UMC handheld controller (Universal
Manual Control) can be placed anywhere
at the workplace.
– Ideal for left and right-hander.
– The touchless positioning of the zoom system
prevents vibrations which would be particularly
harmful at high magnifications.
– The manual controls are configured ergonomi-
cally, and the outer edge is illuminated, so that
it is also visible in darkness.
On the following pages, the functions are
described according to their preset factory button
assignments.
