A
B
The service life of tires depends on driving habits as
well as the right tire pressure and correct chassis
C
setting.
D
Rapid acceleration, extreme cornering speeds and
hard braking increase tire wear. Moreover, tread wear
E
is increased at high outside temperatures and on
rough road surfaces.

Checking tire pressure
Low Tire Pressure
DANGER
Driving the vehicle with low tire pressure increases
the risk of tire failure and resulting loss of control.
Furthermore, low tire pressure increases the rate of
wear of the affected tires and causes damage.
e Always use an accurate tire pressure gauge when
checking inflation pressures.
e Do not exceed the maximum tire pressure listed
on the tire sidewall. (Also refer to "Technical data"
and Fig. 188).
e Cold tire inflation pressure means: all tires must
be cold, ambient temperature maximum 68 °F
(20 °C), when adjusting the inflation pressure.
Avoid sunlight striking the tires before measuring
cold pressures, since the pressures would rise
from temperature influence.
e Check the tire pressure at least monthly when the
tires are cold.
e Valve caps protect the valve from dust and dirt,
and thus from leakage. Always screw caps down
tightly. Replace missing caps immediately.
e Use only plastic valve caps.
e For safety reasons, do not use tire inflating
bottles.
NOTICE
Low tire pressure can cause the tires to overheat and
become damaged, even invisibly.
e Hidden tire damage is not eliminated by subse-
quently correcting the tire pressure.
e Never let air out of hot tires. Tire pressure is
increased in hot tires. The tire pressure would drop
below the prescribed value.
f Please see chapter „Tire pressure" on page 286.
For further information on the Tire Pressure
Monitoring System:
f Please see chapter „Tire Pressure menu - Tire
Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)" on
page 214.
When tires are warm, the tire pressure is increased.
e Never let air out of hot tires. This could cause the
tire pressure to fall below the prescribed value.
Fig. 188: Tire pressure plate on door sill
The tire pressure must correspond to the prescribed
value. Please refer to the plate on the driver's door sill
(Fig. 188) and the Technical Data on page 280 for
the tire pressure values. The values apply to cold tires
(68 °F/20 °C).
e Check the tire pressure of cold tires at least every
2 weeks.
f Please see chapter „Tire Pressure menu - Tire
Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)" on
page 214.
