diagnosis routine must be com-
pleted before the error will be
displayed.
Apart from problems on the
BMW Motorrad ABS, unusual
riding conditions can also cause
a fault message to be generated.
Unusual riding conditions
Driving on the rear wheel
(wheelie) for a longer period.
Rear wheel spinning in place
with front brake engaged (burn
out).
Locked-up rear wheel for a
longer period of time, e.g.
when riding downhill offroad.
Should a fault code occur due
to an unusual driving condition,
the ABS function can be reac-
tivated by switching the opera-
tional readiness off and then on
again.
How important is regular
maintenance?
WARNING
Brake system not regularly
serviced
Accident hazard
To ensure that the
BMW Motorrad ABS is in a
properly maintained condition,
it is vital that the specified
service intervals are kept to.
Reserves for safety
But remember, the potentially
shorter braking distances which
the BMW Motorrad ABS per-
mits must not be used as an ex-
cuse for careless riding. ABS is
primarily a means of ensuring a
safety margin in genuine emer-
gencies.
Be careful in curves! When you
apply the brakes on a corner,
the motorcycle's weight and mo-
mentum take over and even the
BMW Motorrad ABS is unable to
counteract their effects.

Torque Control Assist

(TCA)

The TCA limits the motor torque,
depending on the rear wheel slip.
To enable optimal control of the
drive torque by the driver, the
electric motor's electric control
system monitors the rear wheel
speed and reduces the drive
torque if it exceeds a certain limit.
The TCA assists the rider, par-
ticularly during start-up, and pre-
vents uncontrolled rear wheel
spin on road surfaces with re-
duced friction.
In addition, when the energy re-
covery of the vehicle is high as
a result of deceleration, the TCA
helps to prevent the rear wheel
from locking up on slippery sur-
faces. The function is similar to
