Replace the Shear Pins or Shear Bolts

DANGER
The snowthrower contains a rotating auger and impeller
that throws snow. Fingers or feet can quickly become
caught in the rotating auger or impeller resulting in traumatic
amputation or severe laceration.
• Turn the engine OFF, wait for all moving parts to stop,
and remove the ignition key or push/pull key before
maintenance or repairs.
The augers are attached to the gear box axle with one of the
three hardware systems: shear pins, shear bolts, or shear
bolts with spacers. These shear pins or bolts are designed
to break if an object becomes lodged in the auger housing.
Shear pins are installed with cotter pins. Shear bolts and
shear bolts with spacers are installed with nuts. The three
hardware systems are not interchangeable.
1. STOP the engine. Remove the ignition key or push/pull
key.
2. Remove the remaining pieces of the hardware from the
auger shaft and discard.
3. Use a grease gun, and apply lithium grease to the grease
fitting (if equipped) on the auger shaft. Turn the auger to
distribute the grease.
4. Align the auger holes and axle holes and install:
• a new shear pin (A, Figure 25) through the auger hole
(C) and attach with a cotter pin (B).
25
• a new shear bolt (A, Figure 26) through the auger
hole (B) and attach with a locknut (C).
