SECTION 7 TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

Sawing Problems
WARNING!
Before performing service near moving parts such as blades, pulleys, motors, belts and chains, first turn
the key switch to the OFF (#0) position and remove the key.
PROBLEM
Blades Dull Quickly
Blades Break Prematurely
Blade Does Not Track Right on
Drive Wheel
Blade Guides Do Not Spin While
Cutting
Drive Belts Wear Prematurely or
Jump
Boards Thick Or Thin On Ends Or
Middle Of Board.
Height Adjustment Jumps or Stut-
ters When Moving Up or Down.
Lumber Is Not Square
Sawdust Builds Up On Track
Wavy Cuts

CAUSE
Dirty logs
When grinding teeth, heating too much and
causing teeth to soften
Poor sharpening techniques
Poor sharpening techniques
Rubber belts on blade wheels worn to a point
that blade contacts metal pulley - look for
shiny spots on edge of wheels
Tension too tight
Cant adjustment is incorrect
Frozen bearings
Engine/motor drive pulleys out of alignment
Stress in log which causes log to not lay flat
on the bed.
Set in teeth.
Bed rails misaligned.
Up/down chain improperly adjusted.
Vertical wear pads are too tight.
Vertical side supports not square to bed
Blade not parallel to bed rails
Sawdust or bark between cant and bed rails
Tooth set problems
Excessive oiling
Track wipers worn
Track is sticky
Excessive feed
Improperly sharpened blade (This will be the
problem 99% of the time!)
Blade guides improperly adjusted
Sap buildup on blade
Tooth set problem

SOLUTION
Clean or debark logs, especially on entry side of
the cut
Grind just enough metal to restore sharpness.
Use water/coolant while sharpening blade
Make sure the tip is being sharpened com-
pletely: Read the instructions with your blade
sharpening equipment carefully
Read the instructions with your blade sharpen-
ing equipment carefully
Change blade wheel belts (B-57)
Tension blade to recommended specifications
Readjust
Replace bearings
Align pulleys
After log has been squared, take equal cuts off
opposing sides. Take a board off the top. Turn
the log 180 degrees. Take a board off. Repeat,
keeping the heart in the middle of the cant, and
making it your last cut.
Resharpen and reset blade.
Realign sawmill.
Adjust up/down chain.
Adjust pads.
Adjust side supports.
Adjust bed rails parallel to blade.
Remove particles
Resharpen and reset blade
Do not oil track
Adjust wipers to firmly contact track
Clean track with solvent and apply silicone
spray
Slow feed rate
Resharpen blade, following the sharpener's
instructions carefully
Adjust blade guides.
Use Water Lube.
Resharpen and reset blade
