    Introduction Using This Manual Thank you for purchasing a Brother multi-function center (MFC). This MFC has been designed to be simple to use, with LCD screen prompts to guide you through programming your MFC. However, you can use your MFC to its fullest potential by taking a few minutes to read this manual.
  • Page 23: Test Sheet Procedure And Product Registration (For Usa Only)

    (For USA Only) After programming your Station ID, please fill out the TEST SHEET included with your MFC, and then fax it to Brother’s Automated Fax Response System as your first transmission. This will verify that your MFC is properly installed.

    MFC-5100C Control Panel Overview Fax Keys: Fax Resolution Sets the resolution when you send a fax. Receive Mode Use to select how the MFC will handle incoming calls. Redial/Pause Redials the last number called. Also inserts a pause in auto dial numbers.

    Navigation Keys: Menu/Set Lets you access the Menu and Programming mode and stores your settings in the MFC. Press to scroll forward or backward to set a menu selection. Also, you can use these keys to do an alphabetical search for the names of stored numbers.

    Voice Mail will keep your MFC from receiving faxes. If you set Voice Mail and the Brother MFC to answer at the same number of rings, there is no way of knowing which one will answer first. It is important to remember that neither Voice Mail nor the MFC can pass the call back to the other after the call has been answered.

    The receiving fax responds with fax receiving tones—loud, chirping sounds. A receiving fax chirps for about 40 seconds over the phone line, and the LCD shows RECEIVING. If your MFC is set to the FAX mode, it will answer every call automatically with fax receiving tones.

    Choosing a Location Place your MFC on a flat, stable surface, such as a desk. Select a place that is free of vibration and shocks. Locate the MFC near a telephone jack and a standard, grounded power outlet. Choose a location where the temperature remains between 50°F and 95°F (10°–35°C).

    Setting up the MFC Connect the power cord. There is no ON/OFF switch. When you plug in the power cord, the power goes on and the LCD shows: WARNING The MFC must be grounded using a 3-prong plug. Since the MFC is grounded through the power outlet, you can protect yourself from potentially hazardous electrical conditions on the telephone network by keeping the power to your MFC on when you connect it to a telephone line.

    Installing the Ink Cartridges Check that you turned on the power (by plugging in the power cord). The LCD shows: Open the Scanner cover of the MFC by pulling the scanner cover release lever toward you and lifting the scanner cover. After a few seconds, the print head will move left to its replacement position.

    Do not throw way the white shipping cover. You will need it for future transportation. We recommend that you install the ink cartridges from left to right in this order: Black, Cyan, Yellow, Magenta. Open the Black ink cartridge bag and take out the ink cartridge. Carefully remove the sealing tape from the bottom of the ink cartridge.

Connections The external TAD must be plugged into the back side of the MFC, into the jack labeled EXT. Your MFC cannot work properly if you plug the TAD into a wall jack (unless you are using Distinctive Ring).

    Converting Telephone Wall Outlets There are three ways to convert to an RJ11 jack. The first two ways may require assistance from the telephone company. You can change the wall outlets from one RJ14 jack to two RJ11 jacks. Or, you can have an RJ11 wall outlet installed and slave or jump one of the phone numbers to it.

    Entering Text When you are setting certain functions, such as the Station ID, you may need to type text into the MFC. Most number keys have three or four letters printed above them.     Polling Polling is the process of retrieving faxes from another fax machine. You can use your MFC to “poll” other machines, or you can have someone poll your MFC. All parties involved in polling need to set up their fax machines to accommodate polling.
