11 - LUBRICATION

With poorly distributed thermosiphon cooling, the 5 HP requires excellent lubrication.
The splash lubrication system is simple and foolproof, but insufficient at high speed. Lubrication is carried out
using a spoon mounted on the head of each connecting rod. This spoon plunges into a sheet metal bucket inside
the oil pan.
Oil sump capacity: 3.4 liters (after draining)
11 a - What type of oil to choose?
- If the engine has been reconditioned, therefore cleaned of all particles, a good current 20/50 detergent oil can
do the trick. but an oil studied for old vehicles is preferable; the price should really not be a criterion of choice.
On the other hand, if the engine has not been reconditioned, keep a non-detergent oil with the same
characteristics as that used previously (ex: SAE 30 or 40 monograde.) Otherwise the detergents will take off all
the 'dirt' which would block the circulation. Oil Non-detergent oils are still readily available on the market.
11 b - Oil level:
Screwed and graduated dipstick, each division of which corresponds to one liter
At the front of the crankcase and on the left is a tap around which the oil level is always necessary. An
excess is acceptable, especially for mountain journeys.
'' Very important:
After each emptying and filling of the crankcase, make sure:
1 - that the oil flows through the tap located on the left and in front of the engine crankcase.
This makes it possible to ensure that the buckets in which the connecting rod spoons are immersed is certain to
be filled with oil;
2- that the oil pump feeding the buckets is working properly. To realize this, unscrew the bronze 6-point plug
located on the front face of the engine crankcase, next to the level valve indicated above. Start and accelerate
slightly. At this time the oil must escape through the open orifice. Otherwise, add another liter of oil to the
crankcase and if the pump still does not deliver, prime it by injecting one or two syringes of oil through the
orifice.
When reassembling, take care to properly block the nut forming the plug. ''

Oil change: The figure of one oil change every 1,500 kilometers announced by the manufacturer seems
reasonable. If you drive a little, change it at least once a year.
A little old trick: screw or stick a small magnet on the engine drain plug, as well as on the gearbox drain plug.
They will attract all the filings and they will thus spare the wear and tear of the mechanics.
11 c - Oil pump:
11 d - Improved oil pump flow rate.
Here is a tip to improve the flow of the oil pump:
Advantage: when starting up, the pump always pumps , without having to increase the speed to obtain the
centrifugal force necessary to spread the vanes.
