6.5 Transferring New Firmware to the 6040
Flytec is continually improving, adding features and
enhancements to the 6040 firmware. Periodically
Flytec AG and Flytec USA will post firmware at
www.flytec.ch and www.flytec.com. To update the
6040 firmware, it is necessary that the 6040 USB
driver is installed on your PC. If you have installed
FlyChart 4.52.38 or later the driver should already be
installed. If necessary, you can download the stand-
alone driver from http://flytec.com.
To update the firmware, make certain the 6040 is
turned off and connect the 6040 to your PC with the
provided USB cable. The 6040 may start a high
pitched beeping when the USB cable is connected, if
this occurs, the cable must be unplugged and the
6040 turned off (if it turned on) before attempting to
flash the firmware. Double click on the appropriate
firmware file on the website and the dialog above
right will open. Click Run, and the Firmware Update
window shown right will open. The Flasher should
automatically find the port that your 6040 is plugged
into. Click the Update button; the firmware upload begins and a status bar shows the progress.
Leave the 6040 undisturbed until the "Firmware update is complete" message appears.
Important: Due to memory reorganization that may occur during firmware updates, it may be
necessary to clear the 6040 memory after upgrading the firmware (the firmware release notes
will indicate if it is necessary). This can be done with the Clear/Initialize memory in the
Main Menu. The firmware release notes will inform you which aspects of the memory need to be
cleared (if any). It is recommended that all flights, waypoints/routes and user-settings be
downloaded and saved to FlyChart before installing new firmware, in the event memory
clearing is necessary.
Important: Never leave the PC cable hooked up to the unit when it is turned off. If this is done
energy will be consumed, and the battery can be drained.
6.6 Optional Software
With the help of a release code obtainable from the Flytec AG or Flytec USA, additional special
functions can be activated. To enter a release code:
• Select Optional SW-Packages from Instrument Setup in the Main Menu and press OK.
• Highlight the appropriate software package from the Optional Software Packages list.
• Press OK and the code 30000 will start blinking.
• Press the
key; the code will jump to 30000.

keys to set the code obtained from Flytec and press OK.

• The 6040 display will display "Package released".
Note: If you enter a wrong code, the instrument will be blocked for 5 minutes or longer!
