CHAIN TENSION

• Stop the motor and remove the battery before setting the chain tension. Turn the bar cover
knob counter-clockwise to loosen the bar cover but do not remove the bar cover. Turn the
chain tensioning screw clockwise to tension chain. Turn the guide bar knob clockwise to
tighten. Refer to the Replacing the bar and chain section for additional information.
• The chain must be retensioned whenever the flats on the drive links hang out of the bar
groove.
• During normal operation, the temperature of the chain will increase. The drive links of a
correctly tensioned warm chain will hang approximately 1/16" (1.3 mm) out of the bar groove.
NOTE: A cold chain is correctly tensioned when there is no slack
!
on the underside of the guide bar, the chain is snug, but it can
be turned by hand without binding. A new chain tends to stretch;
check chain tension frequently.
CAUTION: A chain tensioned while warm may become too
!
tight upon cooling. Check the "cold tension" before next use.
