    SECTION 2 COMMISSIONING 2-1 USING THE TUGGER FOR THE FIRST TIME. Procedure for preparing the tugger for operation after delivery or transport: Check the equipment for any damages. Install the batteries if necessary (where required), (see “Battery removal and installation” section in this manual) make sure to not damage the battery cables.     SECTION 3 OPERATION 3-1 SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR THE OPERATION OF TUGGERS. Driver authorization: The tugger may only be used by suitably trained personnel, who have demonstrated that they can drive and handle loads and have been authorized to operate the tugger by the proprietor or his/her representative. Driver’s obligations and responsibilities: The driver must be informed of his duties and responsibilities and be instructed in the operation of the tugger and shall be familiar with the operator manual.

    3-2.2.SAFETY REGULATIONS FOR TUGGER OPERATION Travel conduct: The driver must adapt the travel speed to local conditions. The tugger must be driven at slow speed when negotiating bends or narrow passageways, when passing through swing doors and at blind spots. The driver must always observe an adequate braking distance between the tugger and the vehicle in front and must be in control of the tugger at all times.

    3-2.3.TRAVEL, STEERING, BRAKING Do not drive the tugger unless the covers are closed and properly locked. Figure 3-1 Travel, Steering and Brake Driving: Set the travel switch (1) to control the driving speed and direction. NOTE: Change the position of Control handle by the tilt adjustment knob. Steering: Apply the control handle to the left or right.

    Braking: The brake pattern of the tugger depends largely on the ground conditions. The driver must take this into account when operating the tugger. The driver must be looking ahead when traveling. If there is no hazard, brake moderately to avoid moving the load and to prevent the trailer from veering out. The tugger can brake in four different ways: Emergency stop, Regenerative braking, Inversion braking, Parking brake.

    CHARGING THE BATTERY Safety regulations for Charging the battery • To charge the battery, the truck must be parked in a closed and properly ven- tilated room. • Do not place any metal objects on the battery. • Before charging, check all cables and plug connections for visible signs of damage.

    4-4 BATTERY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Park the tugger securely (See “Parking the tugger securely”) and turn off the power before removal and installation of batteries.     4-5 BATTERY MAINTENANCE Do not over discharge the batteries: • If you over discharge the batteries you will shorten the life expectancy of the batteries. • If the battery meter shows the batteries need to be charged, charge it promptly. Battery maintenance: The battery cell covers must be kept dry and clean.

    4-6 BATTERY DISPOSAL Batteries may only be disposed of in accordance with national and local environ- mental protection regulations and disposal laws. Batteries contain an acid solution which is poisonous and corrosive. Therefore always wear protective clothing and eye protection when carrying out work on bat- teries.

    5-2 •MAINTENANCE SAFETY REGULATIONS Maintenance personnel Industrial tuggers must only be serviced and maintained by Big Joe authorized servicing dealers. Authorized Big Joe dealers have field technicians specially trained for these tasks. We highly recommend a preventative maintenance contract with the local autho- rized servicing dealer.

    Electrical System Only suitably trained personnel may operate on the tuggers electrical system. Before working on the electrical system, take all precautionary measures to avoid electric shocks, including de-energizing the tugger by removing the battery con- nector. Welding Welding is strictly prohibited. Any modifications to the tugger requires written approval from the manufacturer.

    5-4 DECOMMISSIONING THE INDUSTRIAL TUGGER If the industrial tugger is to be decommissioned for more than two months, it must be parked in a frost-free and dry location and all necessary measures must be taken before, during and after decommissioning as described. On decommissioning the tugger must be hoisted so that all the wheels are clear of the ground.
