Diagnostics and Troubleshooting
Attach an external loopback connector to the network port. Disconnect any live
network cable to the port.

4. Start the test script by typing test from the console prompt.
5. Select from the option list, the device or devices to be tested.
6. To monitor results, type e or s from the test command prompt.
7. To stop the diagnostics, type k from the test command prompt.
8. It is required that the system is power cycled after running diagnostcs.
Figure D-1 shows the banner message displayed when the test script is run.
The user is asked whether read/write testing is to be enabled followed by an option to perform
testing on all supported devices. Read/write testing puts the script into write mode for devices
with writable media (SCSI and IDE Hard Disks and floppy disks). However, before testing
starts on each device it will be tested to make sure that it can be written to. If the device is set
to a read-only mode then the script will act accordingly and switch to read-only testing for that
specific device. The Parallel Port is checked for a loopback and testing cannot proceed on this
port unless it is in place. There is no check to see whether a loopback is on Serial Port 2 before
testing.
DE4xx and DE5xx type network cards will be tested in either external or internal loopback
mode. The test script checks to see whether an external loopback is connected and will enable
testing with the external loopback if successful. If not then the card will be switched to
internal loopback mode for testing. DE6xx type cards do not require the loopback to be
checked and run in external mode even if there is no loopback in place.
If the user wishes to select a subset of supported devices then the option to test all supported
options should be declined. The following examples assume that the user wishes to select
devices manually.
Default values for responses are shown in square brackets after the prompt. Allowable answers
are 'y' or 'Y' for yes and 'n' or 'N' for no.
D–12 FORCE 21264 Alpha PCI/ISA SBC User Information for the EBM65
For DE4xx and DE5xx cards with no external loopback, the card will be
switched to internal loopback mode for testing. DE6xx cards do not require the
loopback to be checked and it will run in external mode even if there is no
loopback in place.
