  • Page 108: Thermal Management

The following sections provide guidelines for evaluating the environment, specifically airflow and ambient temperature requirements. The information provided in this manual is relevant to the integration of the FORCE 21264 Alpha PCI/ISA SBC into a system; the overall thermal design is usually specific to the enclosure you are using.
  • Page 109: Airflow Considerations

    • Provide adequate headroom above the CPU fan, to allow air flow. FORCE COMPUTERS recommends at least one-half the fan diameter. This may restrict placement of Option Modules in adjacent slots.
  • Page 110: Sbc Power Requirements

Environment Data SBC Power Requirements Table 6–3 show the DC power requirements for the FORCE 21264 Alpha PCI/ISA SBC at the available CPU speeds. The maximum figure is derived from worst case measurements on systems running exercisers plus an extra factor of 15%. These figures are peak and systems generally do not run continuously at these levels.
  • Page 111: Emc Considerations

The system designer is recommended to minimise common mode noise tranfer between the FORCE 21264 Alpha PCI/ISA SBC and other system components by the use of ferrite cores clamped to the attached internal cables. These cores should be clamped to all floppy cables, IDE cables, SCSI cables and the DC power harness cable from the power supply, internal to the enclosure.

Interrupt Routing ISA Interrupts The FORCE 21264 Alpha PCI/ISA SBC provides 16 ISA interrupts, 0 to 15. For Windows NT, you can select PICMG interrupt mode during AlphaBIOS setup. In the PICMG interrupt mode, the PCI options are automatically assigned IRQs after ISA options are configured.

Interrupt Routing ISA DMA The FORCE 21264 Alpha PCI/ISA SBC supports two 82C37A direct memory access (DMA) controllers implemented in the Cypress CY82C693UB device. These controllers implement eight DMA channels. DMA channel 4 is used to cascade the two four-channel DMA controllers, so only channels 0 to 3 and 5 to 7 are available.
