If required, all documents provided by the shipyard for the physical installation of the ES38DD must be approved by the vessel’s national registry and corresponding maritime authority and/or classification society. The shipowner and shipyard doing the installation are responsible for obtaining and paying for such approval.

    Simrad ES38DD Simrad ES38DD The Simrad ES38DD is a split-beam transducer. It uses 88 "tonpilz" elements distributed over four quadrants. It is filled with a liquid, and this enables use down to 1500 metres depth. This makes the transducer well suited for landers and towed bodies.

    Cleaning and painting the transducer face During normal use, the transducer is subjected to biological fouling. If this marine growth is excessive, it will reduce the performance of the ES38DD. The transducer has not been designed with any protection against biological fouling.

    Because some paint types may be aggressive to the polyurethane in the transducer, consult our list of approved paints. The list can also be found on http://www.simrad.com. Observe the relevant instructions and safety information provided by the paint manufacturer.

    Context During normal use, the transducer is subjected to biological fouling. If this marine growth is excessive, it will reduce the performance of the ES38DD. Whenever opportunity arise, typically when the vessel is dry-docked, the transducer face must be cleaned for shells and other marine growth.

We recommend that you paint the transducer face immediately after installation, and then again as often as required to maintain the protection.

    Installing the transducer Installation on a towed body Transducers designed to withstand large water pressure are suited for use in towed bodies. A towed body used to hold the transducer is not provided by Kongsberg Maritime. Your organization is responsible for design and manufacture of such body. The recommended installation method is through the hull plating hull using mounting ring.

    Simrad ES38DD Installation Manual Installing the transducer The transducer can be flush mounted on large vessels, where the size of the hull prevents air bubbles from reaching down to the transducer face. Flush mounting can also be used on vessels operating in shallow harbours or waters, where a protruding blister can not be accepted.

    Cable layout and interconnections Burton underwater connector ES38DD transducer is fitted with only a short cable, and this is terminated in a female underwater connector. When the transducer is installed, the design of the subsea device must include a watertight junction box with the matched male panel socket. The transducer cable must then be fed from the junction box to the vessel or land station, or to a transceiver built into the subsea unit.
