MOB / RESCUE

Man Over Board (MOB)
One of the worst casualties: A person went overboard.
Please try to keep your cool, be careful and make clear decisions. Pay attention to your safety and the safety of the
remaining crew! Tell the crewmembers clearly and loudly what they have to do and make sure they understand your
instructions.
It is important that not other persons on board are injured and the ship remains maneuverable.
Pay attention to these important points:
A crew member is immediately and exclusively parked to watch the overboard. He points with outstretched hand
without interruption to the victim.
Immediately throw a lifebuoy, leash or other floating object. On the one hand, he is able to hold on to this, on the
other hand, it is an important visual sign that is even more visible to rescuers, even in troubled seas.
MOB means distress! Suspend a MAYDAY distress call by radio or throw the EPIRB overboard. Even if you think that
you can save the overboard with your own resources. In addition, it is also recommended to press the MOB button
on the chart plotter. It marks the place by GPS.
Start both engines and drop all sails or roll them up.
Immediately drive to the victim and keep calm so as not to endanger him further by boat.
Instruct the crew to put on life vests immediately if they are not already in place.
Uncouple the propellers from the motors (propellers must not turn!) But do not switch off the motors when you are
near the person in the water. A turning propeller may be dangerous in a rescue.
After turning the stern and disengaging the propeller, the ship must be brought back to the victim as quickly as
possible. The ship is best controlled, if the victim is navigated against wind and waves. Lower the bathing ladder.
When rescuing the person, make sure that the person is not under the stern and injured by the stamping ship
movements. It is recommended to use a dinghy for the rescue operation in the given case.
Keep calm.
Divide the crew so each crew member knows what to do.
Pay attention to your own safety and do not put the remaining crew in
any further danger. Only an intact crew can save a person.
