Appendix A: Clearing up Undetected Hardware Conflicts
in Windows 95
Once the Enumerator in Windows 95 detects a single perceived hardware conflict,
(regardless of whether it is real or not), its behavior is unpredictable. You can
have 'perceived conflicts' that are undetected. For example, you may have a
conflict between an IR port and serial port, neither of which are in use. For
instance, in advanced laptop computers (e.g., Thinkpads), Windows 95 ignores
BIOS off/on/configuration settings for IRQ's, serial ports, etc. It considers all
devices ON unless you turn them OFF in Windows 95. To do this, follow the
instructions below.
1. In Control Panel, double-click System.
2. Click the Device Manager tab.
3. Highlight the device in question, and click Properties. At the bottom of the
displayed page, you will see one or more Configurations, such as Docked
and Undocked. Each has a check box for Use in this configuration.
4. To remove a device, uncheck the Use in this configuration box for all
configurations.
