17-6. Paper Empty Detection

When the Drawer runs out of paper, the Actuator for the Paper Empty
Sensor drops into the cutout in the Paper Lifting Plate. This activates the
Paper Empty Sensor and the copier will know that the Drawer has run out of
paper.
As we noted earlier, the Paper Lifting Plate is raised at all times by the
Paper Lifting Springs. To prevent the Actuator for the Paper Empty Sensor
(PC101 for the 1st Drawer and PC102 for the 2nd Drawer) from being
caught by the paper stack when the Drawer is slid out of the copier,
therefore, it is tilted only slightly. This, however, results in the operating
stroke of the Actuator becoming small, which increases possibility of the
Actuator activating the Sensor by flexing of a sheet of paper as it is taken up
and fed in. To prevent this false detection of a paper-empty condition, the
paper empty detection is enabled only when the Paper Take-Up Roll is in the
retracted position. (See 21-8. "Paper Take-Up Roll" for the retracted position
of the Paper Take-Up Roll.)
