USING THE UNIVERSAL AIR SUPPORT HARNESS

(See Figures 9 and 10.)
To assure patient compliance and successful rehabilitation, the Biodex Universal Air Support
Harness must be properly adjusted to provide a comfortable environment for your patients.
This "one size fits all" harness accommodates a wide variety of patient sizes and shapes.
The Velcro® straps are easily adjusted while the harness is on the patient and allow for quick
removal once therapy is completed. The harness can accommodate patients weighing up to
300 pounds with torso sizes measuring from 21" to 56" (61 to 142 cm). Maximum unweighing
capacity with this harness is 180 lb (82 kg).
Follow the directions below to ensure a proper and safe fit.
CAUTION: A snug fit is necessary to provide safe unweighing and improved patient
compliance. It is necessary to ensure that the straps do not lay over pressure points or where
!
friction may occur. These areas may include, but are not limited to, under arms, between legs,
and at the edges of the harness. For purposes of hygiene and comfort, it is recommended that the
patient wear clothing under the contact areas of the harness at all times. Ties should not be worn
as contact with the Velcro
Putting the Harness on the Patient
NOTE: You can perform the following procedure with the patient in a supine, seated or
standing position.
1. Undo the Velcro® straps on the front of the harness. (The front of the harness is the side
with the red button on the seat belt buckle. The label is sewn into the back.)
2. Place the patient's arms through the shoulder straps on each side of the harness.
3. Place the middle torso strap over the iliac crest. The air bladders should be placed equally
around the torso with the fill hoses exposed in the back. Make necessary adjustments to
the vest using the Velcro® straps in the front and back to provide an equal and snug fit.
NOTE: The buckles should line up along the middle of the patient's body on both the front and back.
4. Place the leg straps around the patient's mid-thigh and adjust fit to patient comfort.
5. Close the valves on the fill tubes and attach the hand pump. Using the hand pump, inflate the
air bladders to patient comfort. (The valves on the in-flow tube, when closed, allow air in.)
