8.4 Unloading the Cot

Unloading a cot with a patient on it requires a minimum
of two trained operators working together. Both
operators may stand at the foot-end corners of the cot
while unloading it.
1. Raise the ambulance folding bumper, if present.
2. Release the cot from the cot fastener.
3. Both Operators: Pull the cot out of the ambulance
until the safety hook on the ambulance floor
catches the safety bar on the cot. Keep the cot
raised and level with the ambulance floor (Figure
38). Use additional help as needed.
4. Control Operator: Press the green RAISE/
UNLOAD touch pad to extend the legs. Release
the touch pad when the wheels touch the ground
and the cot is high enough to be released from
the safety hook.
5. Assisting Operator: Move to the head end of the
cot and lift the fastener release handle to release
the safety bar from the safety hook (Figure 39).
6. Both Operators: Roll the cot completely out of
the ambulance. As the cot is rolled away from the
safety hook, the Assisting Operator lets go of the
fastener release handle.
7. Both Operators: Lower the cot to a rolling height
(See Cot Height, page 10).
8.5 One Operator Loading/Unloading
an Empty Cot
If local protocols permit, an empty cot may be loaded
and unloaded from the ambulance by one trained
operator (Figure 40). Follow the instructions in Loading
the Cot or Unloading the Cot.
