Preparing to measure blood pressure
Before the measurement, the patient should:
➡ rest for 5 minutes
During the measurement, the patient should:
➡ sit in a relaxed position
➡ not cross his/her legs
➡ place his/her feet flat on the floor
➡ have his/her back and arms supported
➡ not move or speak

Fitting the cuffs

The measurement must be performed on the bare upper arm.
AIf the patient is wearing a tight-sleeved top, make sure that rolling up
the sleeves does not constrict the arms. It may be necessary for the patient to
remove the top before the measurement is taken.
➡ Open the cuff to form a ring shape and slip it over the upper arm until the
lower edge of the cuff reaches a point about 2-3 cm above the elbow.
The cuff must be positioned so that the marking lies on the artery (see
figure 2).
2-3 cm
The cuff must not be placed on top of wounds, as this could lead to furt-
her injuries.
Ensure that the cuff is not placed on an arm of which the arteries or veins
are undergoing or have undergone medical treatment, e.g. a shunt.
