Determine the left and right sides of the machine from the normal operating position.

Maintenance Procedure
• Change the engine oil.
• Check and adjust the track tension.
• Grease the machine. (Grease immediately after every washing.)
• Check the engine-oil level.
• Check the condition of and clean the tracks.
• Check the condition of the digging teeth and replace any that are worn or damaged.
• Remove debris from the machine.
• Check for loose fasteners.
• Clean the foam air-cleaner element (more often in dirty or dusty conditions)—Models
22972 and 22973 only.
• Check the battery electrolyte level.
• Check the hydraulic-fluid level.
• Check the digging chain for excessive wear and proper tension.
• Grease the trencher housing.
• Check the paper air-cleaner element (more often in dirty or dusty conditions)—Models
22972 and 22973 only.
• Change the engine oil.
• Replace or clean and gap the spark plug.
• Check and adjust the track tension.
• Check the hydraulic lines for leaks, loose fittings, kinked lines, loose mounting
supports, wear, weather, and chemical deterioration and repair if necessary.
• Replace the paper air-cleaner element (more often in dirty or dusty
conditions)—Models 22972 and 22973 only.
• Change the engine-oil filter.
• Replace the fuel filter.
• Replace the hydraulic filter.
• Replace the primary air filter and check the condition of the safety filter (more often
in dirty or dusty conditions)—Model 22974 only.
• Check and grease the road wheels.
• Change the hydraulic fluid.
• Replace the secondary air filter. (more often in dirty or dusty conditions)—Model
22974 only.
• Replace all moving hydraulic hoses.
• Check and adjust the track tension.
• Check and adjust the chain tension.
• Touch up chipped paint
