5. Try adjusting the Keymap Level Adjust parameter to find interesting timbres. If the
Keymap level is too low, no modulation will be applied. If the Keymap level is too high,
the Operator will create noisy timbres. Keymaps with complex or noisy timbres will more
easily create noisy timbres when used as a modulation source, so for these Keymaps the
Adjust parameter may need to be turned down. Keymaps with simple timbres may be too
quiet to apply modulation, so for these Keymaps the Adjust parameter may need to be
turned up.
6. Try using the Keymap Level Source 1 and Source 2 parameters to modulate the
Keymap level with a physical controller or other control source. This often leads to more
interesting sounds.

Modulating an FM Operator with another Layer

Follow these steps to modulate an FM Operator with an audio signal from a different FM or
VAST layer:
1. On the FM Operator page, use the Operator parameter to select an Operator to
modulate.
2. On the FM Operator page, set the Input Source parameter for the selected Operator to
Alt.
3. On the FM Alt Input page, use the Src Layer parameter to select another layer in the
Program. The current Program must have more than one layer.
4. On the FM Alt Input page, use the Alt Input Source/Level parameters to adjust the Alt
Input level. The Alt Input level determines the amount of modulation applied to the
selected Operator.
5. Try adjusting the Alt Input Source/Level Adjust parameter to find interesting timbres. If
the Alt Input level is too low, no modulation will be applied. If the Alt Input level is too
high, the Operator will create noisy timbres. Audio signals with complex or noisy timbres
will more easily create noisy timbres when used as a modulation source, so for these
signals the Adjust parameter may need to be turned down. Audio signals with simple
timbres may be too quiet to apply modulation, so for these signals the Adjust parameter
may need to be turned up.
6. Try using the Alt Input Source/Level Source 1 and Source 2 parameters to modulate the
Alt Input level with a physical controller or other control source. This often leads to more
interesting sounds.
