10.1 Overview

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, RFC 2131 and RFC 2132) allows individual clients to obtain
TCP/IP configuration at start-up from a server. You can configure the Zyxel Device's LAN as a DHCP
server or disable it. When configured as a server, the Zyxel Device provides the TCP/IP configuration for
the clients. If DHCP service is disabled, you must have another DHCP server on your LAN, or else the
computer must be manually configured.

10.1.1 What You Can Do

• Use the General screen to enable the DHCP server
• Use the Advanced screen to assign IP addresses on the LAN to specific individual computers based
on their MAC addresses
• Use the Client List screen to view the current DHCP client information

10.1.2 What You Need To Know

The following terms and concepts may help as you read through this chapter.

MAC Addresses

Every Ethernet device has a unique MAC (Media Access Control) address. The MAC address is assigned
at the factory and consists of six pairs of hexadecimal characters, for example, 00:A0:C5:00:00:02. Find
out the MAC addresses of your network devices if you intend to add them to the DHCP Client List screen.
IP Pool Setup
The Zyxel Device is pre-configured with a pool of 32 IP addresses starting from 192.168.1.33 to
192.168.1.64. This configuration leaves 31 IP addresses (excluding the Zyxel Device itself) in the lower
range (192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.32) for other server computers, for instance, servers for mail, FTP, TFTP,
web, etc., that you may have.

10.2 DHCP Server General Settings

The Zyxel Device has built-in DHCP server capability that assigns IP addresses to systems that support
DHCP client capability. Use this screen to enable the DHCP server. Click Configuration > Network > DHCP
Server. The following screen displays.
