M-500 Appliance Quick Start
Overview
The Palo Alto Networks M-500 appliance is a multi-function appliance that you can configure for one of the following
three modes:
• Panorama mode—Performs both central management and log collection for Palo Alto Networks firewalls. This is the
default mode.
• Log Collector mode—Functions as a Dedicated Log Collector, which an M-Series appliance in Panorama mode or a
Panorama virtual appliance can manage.
• PAN-DB Private Cloud mode—Functions as a private URL filtering solution that Palo Alto Networks firewalls can use to
perform URL filtering lookups. This solution is ideal for organizations that restrict their firewalls from having direct access
to the Internet. For more information, refer to the PAN-OS Administrator's Guide 7.0 or later.

Before You Begin

• Register the M-500 appliance at
activate support.
• Obtain an IP address from your network administrator for the management interface (MGT) and, optionally, obtain IP
addresses for port 1 (eth1) and port 2 (eth2) data ports.
By default, all communication between the M-500 appliance and the firewalls occurs over the MGT interface. In a
high-demand environment, you can configure Panorama to distribute traffic to eth1 and eth2 for various functions
that Panorama performs. In PAN-DB mode, this applies to the MGT interface and port 1 (eth1) only. For more
information, refer to the Panorama Administrator's Guide 7.0 or later.
