    Storm VMT Keyboard Installation These documents are available on the LXE Manuals CD. The LXE VMT keyboard is a customized keyboard, connected to the VX4 with a keyed watertight connector. The LXE VMT keyboard features a 60 key keyboard. The keyboard backlight is controlled manually.

    The keyboard supports all 101 keyboard functions. However, because the keyboard only has 60 keys, all functions are not visible (or printed on the keyboard). Therefore the VX4 keyboard supports what is called hidden keys -- keys that are accessible but not visible on the keyboard.

    The Keyboards Keyboard LEDs The VX4 keyboard has three (3) LED indicators. 1. CapsLock Mode LED Indicator 2. Secondary Mode LED Indicator 3.     This LED should not be lit when power is disconnected from the VX4. The Resume/Suspend key has no effect on a VX4. All power management is controlled by Microsoft Windows. Windows Power Management contains options to set the display timer, hard disk timer and standby timer.

    The Keyboards Control Keys The VMT keyboard has several control keys. Because of the construction of the VX4 and the Microsoft Windows operating system, many of the Control Keys are not used on the VX4. Note: The <F4>, <F5>, <F6>, and <F7> keys have no function as the VX4 has TFT LCD screen with no provision for contrast or brightness adjustments.

    You will need a torquing tool capable of torquing to 50 inch pounds (5.64±.56 N/m). Torque pan head screws to 16.0±1 in/lb (1.8±.11 N/m) when assembling the back mounting bracket to the VX4. Torque ¼ bolts to 50.0±5 in/lb (5.64±.56 N/m) when assembling the bottom mounting bracket to the back mounting bracket.

    Before beginning the vehicle mounting bracket assembly, attach the cable ties to the VX4 and the back mounting bracket as shown in the following figures. Use the cable ties to secure the power cable and RS-232 cables to the VX4 after it has been mounted to the vehicle.

    VX4’s equipped with a radio require an external antenna. A VX4 without a radio does not use an antenna. Some VX4’s may be equipped with a dual antenna option. For these VX4’s, an external antenna must be connected to each antenna connector.

    Connect External Headset Connect External Headset The VX4 provides an external headset connection via an audio jack connector marked “Audio” . Note: The audio port is configured for the LXE supplied headset ONLY. Off-the-shelf PC speakers and headphones do not use the same pinout.

    The Ethernet connector is optional. It is not present on all VX4’s. The optional RJ-45 Ethernet connector is located on the top of the VX4, near the antenna connector. The VX4 Ethernet connector accepts standard RJ-45 Ethernet cable (not included), the same as any PCs on the network.

    Correct electrical polarity is required for safe and proper installation. Connecting the cable to the VX4 with the polarity reversed will cause the VX4’s fuse to be blown. See the following figure titled “Vehicle Connection Wiring Color Codes” for additional wire color-coding specifics.

    The power (on/off) switch is a toggle switch located on the bottom of the VX4. The switch is sealed by a rubber boot seal. The Status LED on the LXE VMT keyboard is lit when the power is You are now ready to use the computer.

    When the system is rebooted, the current contents of RAM are lost. Save any needed data and exit in an orderly fashion from any running programs before rebooting. When the VX4 is turned on or rebooted, the following settings are restored from flash memory and are configured using BIOS Setup.

    Always use the point of the stylus for tapping or making strokes on the display. Never use an actual pen, pencil or sharp object to write on the touch screen. An extra or replacement stylus may be ordered from LXE. See the “Accessories” section for the stylus part number.

    The keyboard is used to manually input data that is not collected otherwise. Almost any function that a full sized computer keyboard can provide is duplicated on the LXE VMT keyboard but it may take a few more keystrokes to accomplish a keyed task.
