EXPOSURE COMPENSATI ON
You can, of co urse, make exposure cor-
rec tions by operating 1hc camera manuall y,
but th e A-1 is also eq uipped with o th er
devices which allow you to corrcc; t the

Unusual lighting conditions which necessi-
tate exposure correction include chose in-
stanct:s when light ta k es up the m ajor part of
the viewing a rea, such

in beach or snow
scenes, and contre-jour or backlit situations
in which light is shining behind the subject,
such as when your subject is in front or a
wind o w or w h en a lamp

behind h im/her. In such situations, th e
camera might be fooled in to givinK a readin g
which would underexpose you r subject, so
you must give it more
exposure th= the
camera shows in AE. This also applies to
high-key or in te n tionally ove rexposed shots.
On the other hand, i t is necessary to reduce
the exposure for a low-key shot. Some cor -
rection may also be necessary if your sub-

ject is not located in the central part of the
viewing scree n .
Exposu re Compensation Dial
O ne device for correcting expos ure in Lile
AE mode is the exposure compensation dial.
To
make the correction.
simply
hold in
the
exposure compensation lock button while
turning the
OU
ter knurled edge or the ASA

The exposure compensaLion scale covers a
full ±2
f/ stop range in indications of

(underexposure by

f/stops),

posu re) , 2 (overexposu re b y one f/stop} and
4 (overexposure by
two
f/stops) . The scale
is engraved in 1/3 f/stop increments so that
intermediate settings may be used. The latter
m ay come in handy for bracketing the ex-
posure .

increments, depending on the situation, the
readout will not necessarily change
