2.8.5 Communication Cables

2.8.5.1 RS-485 Twisted Wire
Shielded cables are required, with one end of the cable shield properly grounded. The D20/D200
and peripherals must be securely and properly grounded within metal enclosures, according to
recommended industry practices. RS-485 cabling must meet the following specifications:
• IEEE 802 standard LAN cables: Belden
• 4 pair #22 AWG [0.644mm] stranded tinned copper
• Outer jacket: PVC, 0.032" thick
• Conductors: Color-coded PVC, 0.01" thick
• Shield: #22 AWG [0.644mm] aluminum/polyester tape
• Temperature/Voltage: -20 to +80 C, 150V
• Flammability: Passes UL VW-1 flame test
• Maximum Length: 1000 ft / 300 m
2.8.5.2 Plastic or Glass Fiber
For remote distributed network peripherals, fiber optic cable is recommended for outdoor
switchyard applications.
• Recommended core sizes: 1 mm plastic optical fiber or 200 mm hard clad silica (HCS),
50/100 mm, 62.5/125 mm and 100/140 mm.
• Wavelength: 660 nm (plastic,) 820 nm (glass)
• Maximum Length (without repeaters)
− Plastic: 146 ft / 45 m
− Glass: 6500 ft / 2000 m
