Hints on Searching for a Surname
The Soundex application searches for names using the initial letter followed by the
first three consonants in the surname. To gain the most effective use of this search,
try to enter the initial letter and the first few consonants correctly.
For example, a Soundex search on the characters 'ANDR' could possibly output the
surname ANDREW.
To enable the most comprehensive list of matches to be displayed, the system will
ignore any double consonants in the surname. For example, the surname BENNETT
could be spelt or misspelt as BENETT.
The search also ignores any vowels entered in the surname, so that it does not matter
whether you enter A, E, I, O or U. The letters W, H and Y are also ignored.
Restricting the Search
You may wish to display a Soundex list for a commonly occurring name such as
SMITH. In these instances, you will find it more effective to restrict the display by
specifying additional patient details in the qualifier field.
Valid qualifier details are: (Surname,Forename,DoB )
Remember to include the commas even if you have not entered all the qualifier
details.
e.g.: Qualifier [SMITH@,,12.02.67 ]
For further details about the Soundex application, refer to the Soundex Reference
Manual.
