Modems

Remote connection to the CSM is available through a modem. Remote access through a modem is slower than remote
access through an Internet connection. However, if Internet access is not available or cannot be provided due to security
(firewall) issues or other reasons, the modem provides an alternative. Full access to the Web User Interface for monitoring
and control of the CSM is provided via modem connection. The CSM can be purchased with an internal modem or a
commercially available external modem can be installed in the field. The internal modem cannot be added to the CSM in
the field.
The recommended internal modem and also the external modem are certified for use in the
United States of America. An external modem should be purchased locally (in country) to be
sure that it is certified for local usage. Using or importing unapproved telecommunications
equipment is a criminal offense in most countries. Check local telecommunication device
approvals before using any modem on the CSM.

Internal Modem

If an internal modem is purchased with the CSM, the modem chip is installed in the modem socket on the main control
board. This chip is located on the left-hand side of the main control board roughly half way up the board. See the slot
labeled Internal Modem on Figure 29. An analog phone line must be run to the CSM and inserted into the port labeled
Phone Connector, also shown on Figure 29.
The CSM is immediately accessed through the modem from a remote dial-in host (the host computer's IP address must be
set to 192.168.1.111). To configure the CSM for access at a different IP address, or to configure the modem for access
through an Internet Service Provider (ISP), use the Admin Tool.

External Modem

An external modem may be connected to the CSM. The external modem and the connecting cables are commercially
available. If an external modem is used, an analog phone line must be run to the modem and a cable must be assembled
and run from the serial port on the modem to COM2 on the CSM (see Figure 29 for COM2 location). The following
hardware must be purchased to connect an external modem:
